Thank you, Rogers Cable 10
Oshawa TV station, Rogers Cable 10, has demonstrated that it shares the SASS
vision of "giving youth a voice" in their community. Award-winning Rogers producer,
Greg Rist, was the first to realize the importance of the SASS program years ago.
In 2007, a special monthly feature began showcasing some of the accomplished
young SASS writers in Durham, thanks to producer, Judi Calow, station manager,
Steve Simic, cameraman Lloyd, and the vibrant Daytime hosts, Kasia Bodurka and
Jim Bamboulis.
We recognize Nash Ouellette and Tafar-I Davis for being the first SASS students to
amaze Cable 10 viewers in March of 2007, opening windows of opportunity for the
SASS singer-songwriters who would follow.
The month of May brought one of the most talented and gracious founding
students of SASS at Ajax H.S., Lindsay Regan, into the Rogers studio. Three
generations of Lindsay's family were on hand to admire her great performance.
Following her appearance on Daytime, Lindsay wrote the SASS site:
I will cherish these moments for the rest of my life. I wanted to say so much more when I
was talking but it went by so fast! But my parents love the fact that you made this
opportunity for me and all the other hundreds of fantastic memorable experiences that
SASS has blessed me with! I love you and Dale for the people that you are and everything
I have learned as a SASS member. We are family, and you guys mean the world to me.
In April of 2007, SASS alumni, Tony Ranalli and Laila Darwish appeared on Daytime with band member, Greg, from their
original band, Miami. One of the most moving moments of this interview was Tony's tribute to his Henry Street H.S. SASS
teacher, Victor Fuke, who believed in Tony through his high school years, and inspired him to pursue teaching, as well.
Fresh from winning top honours in the 2007 Environmental Song Contest, 13-year-old Jehvon Grant, of
Lincoln Alexander P.S., appeared on Rogers in June, performing his winning rap song "Listen!"
Jehvon's song has already been professionally recorded by Patrick Stephenson and Dale Russell as
part of his prize package, which also included a Microsoft X-Box and $1,000 from MIAC (see home
page).
Justin Bridgemohan eloquently shared his
deep conviction of the senselessness of
war and violence in his rap performances
in July's SASS feature on Rogers' Daytime.
Justin's memorable interview will air again
in the month of August, 2007.
Closing message to these SASS singer songwriters:
Dale and I, the Durham District School Board, your parents, musical peers, and your whole community are proud of you! You
are outstanding young people.
Keep up your writing, and we look forward to seeing more hard-working, young Durham artists in the TV studio when
Daytime resumes its programming in September.
Thanks, again, to everyone at Rogers Cable 10 in Oshawa. -- Artemis and the SASS Team --
